Doris Obenshain is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor in the state of Delaware. She completed her Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola College in Maryland in 1998. A Daybreak staff member since 2006, she speaks both Spanish and French. As a pastoral counselor, Doris’ approach focuses both on a clinical understanding of emotional distress and on an invitation to clients to draw on their personal spiritual values and beliefs in whatever way is most comfortable for them. Daybreak welcomes persons of any spiritual persuasion as well as those who profess no religious affiliation. Doris’ commitment is to provide a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere in which each individual can change and grow toward personal goals and the fullness of his/her potential. Her strengths include depressive and anxiety disorders (including recovery from trauma), marriage and relationship difficulties, spiritual and personal growth, and supporting recovery from substance use/addictions as well as support for family members affected by substance use. Doris works primarily with individual adults and couples.  Her clinical approach is based largely on cognitive-behavioral theory (how thinking affects mood and behavior) and family systems theory (how patterns in one's family of origin affect current beliefs/behaviors/relationships).  She has received training in couples work with both the Gottman Institute (Level I) and the Couples Institute.
